Gerona is the most important city of the Isle of Youth. It concentrates
56,8 % of the population (1999) and, owing to that reason, most
cultural, sport, and recreation facilities
of the special municipality.
This location has achieved a high degree of development in the field
of education. Worth-mentioning are the vocational school of art,
2 higher-learning institutes, 4 schools for special education, 1
urban and 6 rural junior high schools, among others.
There are two National Heritage sites: the museum El Abra and the
ship El Pinero. There are also two important museums: Museo de Historia
Natural and Museo de la Clandestinidad.
The Isle of Youth is the place of birth of Sucu-Suco, a musical
genre that has captivated many people owing to its contagious rhythm.
